The 88th Academy Awards were held on February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with Chris Rock hosting and David Hill and Reginald Hudlin producing. For the second year in a row all 20 acting nominees were white, and the ceremony took place amid the #OscarsSoWhite protests. Rock addressed the controversy directly in his opening monologue, joking that if the Academy nominated hosts, he would not even have gotten the job.

The newspaper drama Spotlight won Best Picture in an upset over The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road, which had entered the night with 12 and 10 nominations. Spotlight won two Oscars, the other for Best Original Screenplay. Mad Max: Fury Road won six, the most of the night, sweeping early craft categories that included costume design for Jenny Beavan, production design, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, sound editing and sound mixing.

Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar, Best Actor for The Revenant, after going home…
