The 69th Academy Awards took place on March 24, 1997, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The ceremony was televised by ABC, produced by Gil Cates, and hosted by comedian Billy Crystal, marking his fifth time as host — a fan favorite known for his sharp humor and musical numbers.
The English Patient was the big winner of the night, taking home 9 Oscars, including "Best Picture" and "Best Director" for Anthony Minghella. The film's success echoed that of classic epic romances, sweeping the Academy with its lush visuals and emotional depth. Geoffrey Rush earned "Best Actor" for his performance in Shine, while "Best Actress" went to Frances McDormand for her role in Fargo. Cuba Gooding Jr. won "Best Supporting Actor" for Jerry Maguire, delivering one of the most memorable acceptance speeches in Oscar history — screaming "Show me the money!" on stage and bringing the audience to their feet. Juliette Binoche surprised many by taking "Best Supporting Actress" over frontrunner Lauren Bacall, adding to The English Patient’s dominance of the evening.
The night also marked the final Oscar nomination for legendary cinematographer Jack Cardiff, and "You Must Love Me" from Evita took home the gold for "Best Original Song," sung by none other than Madonna herself.
