Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a pursuit within the field of artificial intelligence (AI) aimed at developing AI that possesses human-level cognition. This type of AI, also known as Strong AI, differs from most of the AI currently available which is limited to specific tasks, and from Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) that can surpass human intelligence. The term was coined in 1956 by John McCarthy, one of the organizers of the Dartmouth Workshop. Achieving AGI involves creating machines that possess cognitive abilities similar to humans, enabling them to comprehend, acquire knowledge, and apply it across various domains. Opinions about the AGI timeline range from a possible near-future achievement to decades or even a century, while some believe it may never be attainable.
