Mattel released the Barbie doll dressed as Marilyn Monroe in the white halter dress from The Seven Year Itch in 1997. Women’s Wear Daily reports that Mattel made Monroe dolls from 1997 through 2002, and that the white dress doll and a doll in the red sequin gown from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes both came out in 1997. The Hollywood Reporter says a 1997 Monroe doll in baby pink satin belonged to Mattel’s Hollywood Legends Collection, and Variety lists the white halter dress, the red sequined gown and the one shouldered evening gown from How to Marry a Millionaire among the earlier Monroe dolls, adding that the company’s Monroe dolls date back to at least 1997.
