The 2022 Met Gala celebrated the opening of "In America: An Anthology of Fashion," which followed 2021's "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion," showcasing American fashion and its rich history across rooms from 1805 to 1915. The dress code was "gilded glamour, white tie," a callback to the "more-is-more" era of high fashion popular between 1870 and 1890, also known as the Gilded Age. The exhibition featured different museum settings displaying a survey of more than two hundred years of American domestic life and told a variety of stories—from the personal to the political, the stylistic to the cultural, and the aesthetic to the ideological, and a reflection on these narratives through a series of three-dimensional cinematic 'freeze frames' produced in collaboration with notable American film directors. These mise-en-scènes explored the role of dress in shaping American identity and addressed the rooms' complex, layered histories.
