Drawing inspiration from scholar Monica L. Miller’s seminal 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibition explores Black dandyism as a radical and creative form of self-styling.
The show is organized into 12 thematic sections: Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism. Each highlighting a different characteristic of dandy style and its political, social, and aesthetic power from the 18th century to the present.
