Alan Shepard was an American astronaut and naval aviator, selected as one of the original seven astronauts in 1959 for NASA's Project Mercury. On May 5, 1961, he made history by piloting the Freedom 7 spacecraft, becoming the first American to travel into space.

Following his groundbreaking flight, Shepard did not return to space until the Apollo program. In 1971, he commanded Apollo 14, where he engaged in extensive scientific exploration on the Moon, and famously hit two golf balls, illustrating both the serious nature of space exploration and the human spirit's playful side.
