As the legend goes, the Automaton Monk was crafted by the talented mechanician Juanelo Turriano, a courtier from Toledo, Spain. The tale recounts that King Philip II, the son of Emperor Charles V, was praying at the bedside of his son and heir, who had sustained a serious head injury. In his despair, he vowed to deliver a miracle in return for his child's healing. Once his son recovered, Philip commissioned Turriano to create a lifelike replica of the Franciscan friar Diego de Alcalá, who would later be canonized as Saint Diego.
