Developed by David Hanson of the Hong Kong-based engineering company Hanson Robotics, Sophia was designed to simulate human emotions and engage in social interactions. The robot, equipped with over 30 motors in its head, utilizes facial recognition and natural language processing to interpret and respond to human emotions. She is known for her human-like appearance and fifty facial expressions. Sophia has been described as having scripting software used for speeches and answers to pre-set questions.

Primarily designed for public appearances and interviews, she can recall past conversations and refine her responses over time. She has appeared at the United Nations on several occasions and was named the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Innovation Ambassador in 2017.
