As part of the Barbie "Shero" line that celebrates women who break boundaries, Mattel has released a doll in honor of Ibtihaj Muhammad, an American Olympic fencer who made history by competing while wearing a hijab. The Barbie designed in her likeness features complete fencing gear, including a mask and a saber, along with training shoes and a hijab that frames her face.

Ibtihaj Muhammad, who, as a child in New Jersey, would create tiny hijabs from tissues to dress her Barbie dolls, collaborated with Mattel's designers on the doll's creation, providing input on details such as the styling of the hair beneath the scarf and the proper way to tie the hijab. This special-edition doll sports an all-white fencing outfit and comes with a matching saber and helmet. Unlike traditional Barbie dolls, she has a more athletic physique, reflecting the strength and determination of athletes.

The 31-year-old athlete gained international recognition during the 2016 Summer Olympics, where she became the first female Muslim-American to earn a medal at the Games and the first American woman to wear a hijab during competition.

The series also features Ashley Graham, Gabby Douglas, Misty Copeland, and Ava DuVernay.
