Costume Designer and illustrator Bob Mackie began designing costumes for Elton John in 1973 and continued to do so for many years. His career began in 1961, and since then, he has won nine Emmys, three Academy Award nominations, and an induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. He is best known for the original sketch of the Marilyn Monroe dress worn in 1962 at President John F. Kennedy's birthday celebration.

Starting in 1974, Bob Mackie sketched many of John's iconic costumes, such as the Dodgers uniform and the Donald Duck outfit that Elton wore on his show in Central Park. Elton asked him to create outfits similar to Cher's, resulting in many sequins, feathers, boas, capes, and hats that helped establish a lasting visual identity for the rock star.
