Elton John and Bernie Taupin at a 1968 photo shoot for Dick James Music, a British music publishing company responsible for publishing the songs of many of the biggest names in pop music, including The Beatles in 1967. They both answered an advertisement in the music paper New Musical Express, placed by Liberty Records. This company was seeking new songwriters. The two men quickly developed a close working relationship and went on to write 396 officially released songs together, including "Your Song," "'Rocket Man," and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." Their collaborations have created a catalog that has sold more than 300 million records worldwide, including 10 #1 albums (combined UK and US), 38 gold albums, and 31 platinum or multi-platinum albums. Taupin writes lyrics, and John arranges a composition around them, reportedly being able to execute this process in as little as 15 or 20 minutes.
