In 1961, Vostok 1 became the first spacecraft to carry a human, Yuri A. Gagarin, into space, 25 days prior to the first U.S. suborbital flight. After one orbit, the spacecraft reentered the atmosphere and landed in Kazakhstan 1 hour 48 minutes after launch. Gagarin reentered Earth, ejected from the capsule, and landed safely by parachute.
