First Record Deal

In 2004, Taylor Swift met Scott Borchetta, a DreamWorks Records executive preparing to launch the independent label Big Machine Records. The following year, at an industry showcase at Nashville’s famous Bluebird Cafe, Taylor’s talent caught Borchetta’s eye, leading her to become one of the label’s very first signings.

Taylor’s family showed their belief in her potential too: her father invested approximately $120,000 to buy a three-percent stake in the company. This unique support helped pave the way for Taylor’s debut, as she persuaded the label to bring on producer Nathan Chapman, with whom she began crafting her eponymous debut album.
