Allan Sherwood was introduced in 1964 as a friend of Ken's to balance out Barbie's friend, Midge. Allan was designed to fit Ken's clothes, allowing kids to mix and match outfits between their male and female dolls. The doll was named after Allen Segal, the son-in-law of Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler, who had previously named Barbie and Ken after her children.
