The Apollo 1 was intended to be the inaugural crewed mission of NASA’s Apollo program. Scheduled for launch on February 21, 1967, the mission aimed to test the Command Module in low Earth orbit. Unfortunately, it was tragically cut short when a cabin fire broke out during a preflight test on January 27, claiming the lives of all three astronauts aboard—Virgil Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. The fire spread rapidly in the pure oxygen environment of the spacecraft, rendering the crew unable to escape.
